Showtime renews 'Homeland'

'Homeland'Showtime decision to pick up a second season of its newest drama, "Homeland," came as a no-brainer, and clearly the pay cabler believes the skein has a long future ahead of it. Entertainment president David Nevins reiterated that, although the show is based on the Israeli series "Prisoners of War," the net made some major adjustments bringing it to its air, including adding the CIA offer played by Claire Danes. Because of the different storylines, Showtime doesn't have to simulate "Prisoners" going forward. Keeping audiences and critics in the show's favor going forward is a high priority for Nevins, who clearly realizes the mistakes made by a handful of serialized shows, including AMC's "The Killing," which failed to properly wrap up a storyline that was marketed as being finalized. "There's extreme excitement around this show," Nevins told Variety. "Clearly it has caught some piece of the zeitgeist, and that is resonating with people. Our only anxiety is can they (producers and writers) keep it up and not fall into the serialized traps of other shows?" Ratings have been strong since the Oct. 2 premiere. Starring Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin, "Homeland" reached 4.4 million viewers (across multiple platforms) its debut and has increased its aud since, with its fourth episode Sunday drawing series-best ratings. Exec produced by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, who adapted Gideon Raff's "Prisoners of War" (from Keshet Broadcasting), "Homeland" will begin production on season two in the spring. Avi Nir, Ran Telem and Michael Cuesta also exec produce. Pay cable rivals HBO and Starz have been quick to renew their own series of late, often without much, or even no, ratings data. Starz recently gave a second-season order to "Boss" before the show even began and HBO has occasionally renewed a series after only one episode. "Homeland" was the first drama greenlit by Nevins -- "Shameless" was given its series order just before he arrived and replaced Bob Greenblatt -- and the terrorism-focused skein has showed a shift in the net's programming taste. "I was always very interested in the material and it seemed a waste to have 'Dexter' alone in the fall," Nevins explains. I was aware this fall would be 10th anniversary of 9/11 and felt 'Homeland' would be perfectly spotted." Nevins reiterated that the core cast would be back for the second season but wouldn't guarantee anything beyond that, nor the length of their deals. Net is currently undergoing contract negotiations with "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall. Nevins is counting on the dispute to be settled long before the new season, if there is one, begins shooting early next summer. Next big challenge for Showtime is to launch dark comedy "House of Lies" with Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell. Skein, from creator Matthew Carnahan, is a scathing look at a self-loathing management consultant from a top-tier firm. Series will debut Jan. 8, along with season premieres of "Shameless" and "Californication." "It's a big glossy show that looks at how American business has been messed up," Nevins said. "It feels very relevant." Contact Jon Weisman at jon.weisman@variety.com

Although the latest instalment in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise isn't released in theatres until October 2012, the eager beavers in Hollywood have already unveiled the new poster for the film. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D ignores all the other films in the series and picks up where Tobe Hooper left off in 1973.Directed by John Leussenhop, Chainsaw 3D stars Alexandra Daddario as a young girl who heads to Texas to collect her inheritance money.Little does she know that part of her inheritance is our dear chainsaw-wielding, human skin wearing pal Leatherface.Other details haven't been released, but apparently the new film serves as a 'love letter to fans,' this may be due to the list of our old favourites who are reuniting for the film. We'll see the likes of Gunnar Hansen and John Dugan, and cameos from Marilyn Burns and Bill Moseley. So, against our better judgement, we're actually pretty excited to see the return of Sally, Leatherface and Choptop to the franchise. This is one family reunion we're actually looking forward to.Newbies to the project include Tania Raymonde, Trey Songz, Karem Malicki-Sanchez, Thom Barry and Dan Yeager as Leatherface. So everybody's favourite inbred cannibalistic family is back! And they're welcoming us home with open arms (gripping a blood-dripping chainsaw), see the new poster below.

REVIEW: Elizabeth Olsen Beguiles in Martha Marcy May Marlene

The opening scene of Sean Durkin’s debut feature Martha Marcy May Marlene suggests we’re in for a big rusty bread pan’s worth of rural miserablism, and even though we’re not, the yeasty grayness of those early moments is clearly intentional: A group of women in drab dresses and droopy T-shirts go about preparing dinner in a house whose unfinished interior looks either new and hastily erected or ancient and about to fall apart — it’s hard to tell which. A young boy stomps about in a dusty, scrubby yard; a woman sits on the porch working on a crocheted afghan. When dinner’s ready, a bunch of men sit down to eat; then they leave the table — the man who appears to be the leader murmurs something appreciative about the meal — and the women take their places. Then there’s one lone shot of a ton of dirty dishes jumbled into and around the kitchen sink — there’s no question who’s going to be scouring them clean. It’s as if Amishtown had been taken over by a nicer version of the Manson family. Or maybe they’re not so nice. But what makes Martha Marcy May Marlene so beguiling — aside from the performance given by its lead actress, Elizabeth Olsen — is that the pall of creepy groupthink that hovers over that first scene works as a perverse kind of seduction: You want to know more about this place, and about these people, even though you suspect that knowing more may not be a good idea. Even if you think your brain is soap-proof, Durkin succeeds in washing it just a little bit. The heart, soul and eyes of Martha Marcy May Marlene belong to Olsen’s Martha, a young woman who leaves this strange, crazy-cozy household very early in the movie: We see her heading into the woods with just a small pack on her shoulder, though we also hear the squeak of a screen door and a man’s voice calling after her. Wherever it is she’s running from, she ends up at the Connecticut summer home of her sister, Lucy (Sarah Paulson). The two are clearly estranged, and not just because Martha’s been in a cult for a couple of years; from their exchanges, both the early and the late ones, we can see that the two sisters have never been close. Lucy is now married — a development Martha knew nothing about — to a vaguely uptight architect or developer (all we really know, or need to know, is that he’s some kind of property guy) played by Hugh Dancy. The two welcome her into their luxurious split-level house on the lake, obviously wishing they could unwelcome her. From that point, Martha’s present, in oh-so-safe Connecticut, is intercut with scenes of her past, in that commune somewhere in the Catskills. The place she’s left is presided over by a bookish self-proclaimed prophet named Patrick (John Hawkes, looking like Charles Manson as shot by Walker Evans), who has built a pastoral Utopia where the inhabitants live off the land and allegedly love one another unselfishly. The setup works out fabulously for him — he gets to ritualistically sleep with all the women. But Martha, he claims, is his favorite, and if she stupidly believes it, somehow we do too: She has a solemn, knowing face, with eyes that can melt one minute and pierce the next. She takes to the welcoming pseudowarmth of this new family, even as we can see she’s holding herself apart from it just a little bit. When she’s first introduced to Patrick, by the savvy-dippy young cult member (played by Louisa Krause) who’s taken her under her wing, she compliments him on what he’s done with the land, planting vegetable crops and whatnot. “It’s as much yours as it is mine,” he says with a twinkle of phony generosity in his eyes; she smiles at him a little too demurely, as if to say that she’s listening but not buying, at least not yet. Olsen’s performance is restrained but not tentative; you could say the same for the movie around it. Durkin, who also wrote the script, doesn’t indulge in lots of shaky camera business to convey, you know, the character’s inner turmoil. (The DP here is Jody Lee Lipes.) Even though there’s at least some handheld camera work, you have to really look for it: Some camera dude out there is working really hard at keeping the frame steady, and it’s almost a subliminal effect — if Martha is looking for something to hang onto, maybe we are too, though we barely know it. Durkin is perhaps too obvious in the way he heightens the contrast between Martha’s lumpy-oatmeal commune existence and the overpolished gloss of her sister’s lifestyle. At one point Martha jumps up from sunbathing with her sister on a classy lakeside dock and leaps into the water completely nude, as she would have done back at the old communal swimmin’ hole. Lucy, aghast, hauls her out. “You can’t do that here!” she hisses, and I kept wishing the next line would be, “It’s Connecticut!” But of course it wasn’t — Durkin isn’t going for laughs here, though it’s all too easy to fill in the blanks for ourselves. Still, Paulson and Olsen capture the uneasy electricity of siblings who just can’t get along but who nonetheless remain connected. Paulson plays Lucy as uptight but not unwatchably severe: Sometimes she looks at Martha as if she’d just landed from another planet — or, equally weird, just stepped off a lilypad — and given the unnerving nature of Olsen’s performance, you can see why. One minute she’s bracingly direct; the next she seems to be blinking her way through amniotic fluid, like a newborn lamb fighting for life. You don’t watch her and think, What a dope she is, having fallen for all that hippie-dippie cult stuff. Instead, you see how the perceived security of that makeshift family would make sense to her, up to a point. In other words, Durkin doesn’t condescend to the character he’s written, and in return, Olsen rises to the challenge of that character. At one point, Patrick tries to punish Martha with twisted praise, asserting that she’s a lot like him. Minus the cruelty and the craziness, maybe she is: As Martha, Olsen throws off a muted self-assurance that reads as a kind of charisma. WB Looks to Rome, Sweet Rome Pitch

Purchasing Des Moines-based author James Erwin’s first script pitch was accomplished by having an unusual route: social news aggregator website Reddit.com. Warner Bros. bought Erwin’s pitch Rome, Sweet Rome after Reddit clients selected to boost his idea up in the site’s web page. The idea? Contemporary U.S. marine corps by some quirk of fate are gone to live in An Italian Man , Capital where they suffer from Roman scores. Because the Marine corps’ presence interferes with history’s timeline, they need to set things back around the right course to return home. Adam Kolbrenner from Madhouse Entertainment spotted the publish and contacted Erwin, a couple-time Risk! champion, to develop his concept for just about any quick purchase. Kolbrenner will produce as well as Hollywood Gangs Gianni Nunnari (300, Immortals). John Ridley will oversee for Hollywood Gang. Chris Gary will shepherd the job for Warner Bros. Erwin’s next book, meanwhile, is past U.S. military actions apt to be launched next season.

At NYFF: Michelle Williams Talks Up Wry, Romantic My Week With Marilyn

It almost wouldn’t be the NY Film Festival these days without Michelle Williams, whose My Week With Marilyn marks the actress’s fourth effort in five years to grace Manhattan’s venerated fall-movie showcase. It’s inarguably her highest-profile work to splash down here — a world premiere debuting in the festival’s prestigious Centerpiece slot, glowing with awards-season ambition and hinging almost entirely on Williams’s risky interpretation of Marilyn Monroe. But come on: We’re talking about Michelle Williams here. Of course she pulled it off. Based on a pair of memoirs by Colin Clark, My Week With Marilyn breezes around the pitfalls of the modern biopic, instead bringing to life a notorious cultural moment — the making of The Prince and the Showgirl, the troubled Monroe/Laurence Olivier collaboration from 1956 — through Clark’s disarming coming-of-age perspective. An art historian’s son with designs on a filmmaking career, Clark (played here by Eddie Redmayne) persists and finagles his way into Olivier’s inner circle ahead of Showgirl’s production. Finally (almost punitively) assigned the deceptively titled job of third assistant director, the 23-year-old finds himself fetching tea, booking accommodations and, before he knows it, retrieving the tardy, insecure American sexpot from her dressing room at Pinewood Studios. Thus begins a simmering courtship between the two, chaste at face value but unswervingly romantic in its coalescence of privilege and damage. The whole film, directed with aplomb by Simon Curtis, inhabits and traverses the space between those dynamics: Monroe exhausts the vexed Olivier (Kenneth Branagh), alienates her new husband Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), captivates her great British co-star Dame Sybil Thorndike (Judi Dench), and is the perfumed gust that sends Olivier’s wife Vivien Leigh (a beautifully vulnerable Julia Ormond) tumbling over the precipice of middle age. (In real life, Leigh originated Monroe’s Showgirl role on the London stage in Terrence Rattigan’s source play, The Sleeping Prince.) Fully aware of and thoroughly destabilized by her effect on this pedigreed class, Monroe’s confidence in Clark comes as a threat to some and a surprise to all. Yet the duo’s connection enables Monroe to pursue crucial moments away from her doomed screen persona. Williams thrives in both modes, to say nothing of her performance of Monroe as Showgirl’s titular Elsie Marina. Combining the three — often in the same scene, directed by Olivier within direction by Curtis — proves a nimble feat of craft that eschews convention, mythology and everything we think we know about Marilyn Monroe. In a press conference following this morning’s screening, Williams emphasized the subtleties separating Marilyn onscreen and off — nuances lost in the unfortunate tradition of, as NYFF programmer Scott Foundas put it, “bad impersonators” who’ve reincarnated Monroe for the camera. “Because the previous representations of her were more of that ilk, it felt like that was kind of the first thing that made me think, ‘Well, maybe I can explore this,’” Williams said. “It was a decision made kind of in the safety of my own home; I didn’t really consider the larger implications of it. And it was a very, very slow process. It all started at home. It all started with watching movies, listening to interviews, poring over books. It was just something that I put on in my living room — mimic a walk, or figure out how exactly it is she’s holding her mouth. “The first sort of big discovery that I stumbled on was that [for] Marilyn Monroe herself, ‘Marilyn Monroe’ was a character that she played,” Williams continued. “The image that you’re most familiar with? There’s a person underneath there. That was the first big discovery: That it was carefully honed, but it was artifice. It was honed to where you couldn’t tell that it was artifice. It felt so real, but it was something that she’d studied and perfected and crafted. So once I discovered that that was a layer, I was finding out what that layer was and getting underneath it. It was a long and ungainly process.” But it pays off. I enjoyed the hell out of My Week With Marilyn, from its intermittent song-and-dance interludes (“It still comes up on my iPod all the time — all the Marilyn Monroe,” Williams said of the songs she sang for the film) to its wry period infatuations to its clipped classical austerity laid waste by Monroe’s woozy compulsions. Mostly, though, Marilyn succeeds as a loving movie about movie love — the lightness of its bliss, the heartache of its illusions. None of the film’s personal infatuations (particularly that of an extraneous wardrobe girl played by Emma Watson) yield quite the charge of the lush moving pictures they serve. It’s almost ghostly in a way — and to hear Redmayne tell it today, maybe not by accident. “I think one of the great things of the whole production was the sense that we shot in the same studio that The Prince and the Showgirl was shot in.” turned to Williams. “And… your dressing room?” “My dressing room was Marilyn’s actual dressing room when she was making Prince and the Showgirl,” Williams said. “And Parkside House is playing Parkside House,” Curtis said of the star’s rented English residence. “So when Marilyn is sitting on those stairs having looked at Miller’s journal, Michelle sat on the very stairs that Marilyn would have sat at. One of the great moments for me was when we shot that wonderful dance from The Prince and the Showgirl. We were actually seeing that on the same stage — on the very spot — where I think it was in 1956 that Marilyn actually danced. In that very spot! It was incredibly moving and incredibly special.” Indeed. Keep an eye on Movieline for more about My Week With Marilyn as its Nov. 4 release date approaches.
